VII OS DAY.Online conference "Embedded operating systems"

The Seventh OS DAY Research and Practice Conference will be held on November 5-6, 2020. This year the event is organized in online format.

OS DAY is the only conference fully dedicated to the development of the operating platforms ecosystem in Russia. It is organized by a consortium of nine leading Russian IT companies and organizations that develop their own operating systems: ISP RAS, DZ Systems, Bazalt SPO, GosNIIAS, Kaspersky Lab, RED SOFT, RusBITeh-Astra, CryptoSoft and Open Mobile Platform.

In 2020, the conference will be dedicated to operating systems for onboard devices; OS as the basis for smart devices; trusted, secure infrastructure of Russian operating systems. Operating platform developers consider as embedded solution any scenario where an operating system is used for a specific purpose within a device or set of devices, with a limited or fixed set of applications.

"Embedded systems now occur everywhere and their reliable and secure operation is critical. The specifics of such systems (e.g. limited resources - power consumption, memory capacity, processor power) impose greater demands and a number of limitations on the methods and technologies used. Therefore, a successful security task solution can only be comprehensive, taking into account the following levels: hardware, operating system and development tools. This is the only way we can make embedded systems sufficiently reliable and resistant to external influences," said Arutyun Avetisyan, ICP RAS CEO. - In particular, it is very important to consider the issues of unification of these systems, as well as - adaptation and development of technologies that already exist for standard systems. OS DAY, which will bring together developers, industry representatives and regulators, is exactly the site that will start an effective discussion and develop a medium-term action plan".

Dmitry Zavalishin, DZ Systems CEO and one of the founders of the conference, emphasized that modern embedded operating systems are a very wide class of products, and gave several reasons for choosing the conference theme in 2020. "First, embedded systems are very demanding to the developer. It is extremely difficult to maintain such a system, it is not always possible to upgrade it, and its operating conditions do not assume the presence of a system administrator in the foreseeable proximity who will fix the problem. A system failure can be extremely critical. Consequently, embedded systems require high quality code. Secondly, they imply a wide range of infrastructure tools to support the life cycle", Zavalishin said. - "Finally, many embedded systems are focused on working within hardware and software suites, which imposes additional requirements on development and debugging tools. It is also important that a large number of projects in Russia are focused on embedded OSes".

The conference accepts reports on the following themes.
- Scientific basis for development of embedded operating systems.
- Requirements and limitations of embedded applications of operating systems.
- Principles and tools used to configure embedded systems for specific use.
- Resource management in embedded systems.
- Remote debugging and monitoring.
- Infrastructure components, including remote configuration and system updates.
- Toolkit, specific for embedded applications.

The OS DAY Program Committee also traditionally considers reports that do not fit the specified topic, but meet the general direction of the conference - the development of operating systems and system tools. The selected articles on the reports' themes are recommended for publication in the journals "Proceedings of ICP RAS" or "System Administrator", which are included in the list of HAC and are indexed in RSCI.

The conference program includes an exposition of the latest Russian technologies in the field of creating operating systems and hardware platforms, as well as tools for software development and reliability assurance.

The attendance is free of charge. To participate, please register on the website: http://osday.ru/.

Place and time of the event. The day before the conference, each registered participant will be given access for the e-mail address specified during registration.

The conference is supported by: the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control (FSTEC).

For reference

The OS DAY scientific and practice conference has been held annually in Russia since 2014. It is a communication platform for theorists and practitioners of system programming and operating platform development, a place for consolidation of Russian OS developers and search for points for joint activities. The objectives of the conference are to identify promising areas and technologies in the field of operating system development, identify the main challenges of modern IT industry and help developers, manufacturers and customers to share their experience. Organizers: ISP RAS, DZ Systems, Bazalt SPO, GosNIIAS, Kaspersky Lab, RED SOFT, RusBITech Astra, Cryptosoft and Open Mobile Platform. The goals of creating a community of organizers: to define the tasks and opportunities of Russia in the field of development of operating platforms, to highlight promising technologies, to share expertise, to identify the challenges of the IT-industry and trends.
